Professor Jesús M. Merayo Lloves

Professor Jesús Merayo Lloves is Director of the Instituto Universitario “Fernández-Vega” (“Fernández-Vega” University Institute, IUFV) and Professor of Ophthalmology at the Universidad de Oviedo, Spain. He directs the Ocular Surface and Inflammation Clinical Unit, and his research focuses on regenerative medicine for the ocular surface, including original contributions on ocular allergies, dry eye, refractive surgery, uveitis, keratoconus and advanced therapies. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the Universidad de Valladolid (1986), is a Consultant in Ophthalmology (1992) and has a PhD in Medicine and Surgery (1995), having conducted research on ocular allergies. When he finished the Spanish medical residency programme, he realised a fellowship in Ocular Immunology and Uveitis at the University of Harvard’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, US (1993-95), before completing postgraduate training in Refractive Surgery at Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga in Colombia (1997) and Optics and Optometry studies at Universidad CEU-San Pablo in Madrid (2002). He also has management training, having completed a Master of Business Administration (EAP, Madrid, 1997). He is author of over 160 scientific articles (H-index 30), 60 books and book chapters and three patents, and has made over 600 contributions to conferences, courses and seminars. He has participated in 62 research projects (in 30 of which he was principal investigator). Professor Merayo is coordinator of the IUFV postgraduate training programmes, leading the following areas: the ophthalmology and vision sciences line of research for the Medicine PhD programme; the Innovation course in the Master of Neuroscience, six Master’s degree programmes, four professional postgraduate diploma programmes and the continuing professional development programme.

The group started its work in 2012, when Professor Merayo joined the Universidad de Oviedo and the Instituto Universitario Fernández-Vega, although there had been collaborations between the researchers and university lecturers before this date. It is a multidisciplinary health sciences group which conducts translational research.
